Arashi-Te Budō Kai: The Badge

Okinawan Karate   •   Traditional Jujitsu   •   Practical Kung Fu

The Storm

The overall cyclonic structure of the badge represents arashi (嵐) - the storm. In Japanese culture, the storm not only represents destruction but also the renewal and rebuilding which occurs after the typhoon has passed. The storm is important to ABK as noted under the club page.

The kanji are arashi (嵐) and te (手) - "storm hand".

Tomoe

Each arm of the storm is a tomoe, a comma-shaped glyph originally thought to represent the arm bracer of an archer and thereby linked to the Japanese god of war Hachiman. The tomoe is a commonly-found symbol in Japan and the rest of South-East Asia, often contained in circular patterns known as mitsudomoe as found in the ancient royal flag of Okinawa (trilateral symmetry) and the well-known yin/yang symbol (bilateral symmetry).

Plum Blossom

The yellow centre, combined with the five-lobed layout invokes the heart and five petals of the plum blossom, a symbol of hope and perseverence.
